Makeup Ingredients to Avoid!

Hello lovely ladies!

Some of us girls don't bother checking the ingredients of our makeup but what I learned is that we should always check them. Why? Because some of the ingredients present in our cosmetic products are actually dangerous. Some may also cause us breakouts especially for some who have sensitive skin.

I am not an expert on these things and what I am about to tell you are basically what my research says and I promise to put all my research sources when I have the time. Second, I am admit that despite knowing these chemicals or ingredients are present in my makeups, I still use them. I just don't want to be labelled as hypocrite or what.

So yeah. Here we go!
Makeups, are they all safe?
Photo Credit: Beauty in My Mind

1. Parabens. Parabens are present in most of our makeups (also in deodorant, food processing etc.). They are found in biopsies of breast cancer tumor at the amount present in cosmetic products. The things is, doctors suggested that women who are into makeup avoid parabens and use cosmetics free of it.

  • Use: Parabens prevent inhibition of bacteria and growth of yeast in our makeup to extend shelf life.
  • Effects: Skin disruption, rashes, breast cancer. Parabens disrupt hormone functions so skin irritation and reproductive malfunctions.

2. Mineral Oil. Mostly present in moisturizers, lip gloss and body baths. Mineral oils are by product of petroleum (at least this was what my professor in Chemistry told me). Petroleum, when distilled or components are separated, is used to make plastic, kerosene, gasoline etc. Basically, if petroleum is refined to mineral oil and not properly distilled, you are most likely applying plastic on your face not to mention excessive amount causes skin irritation and possible breakouts.
  • Use: Coats skin to keep water from leaving the body through skin.
  • Effects: Too much mineral oil can cause nausea and skin cancer.

3. Imidazolidinyl Urea. Like parabens, this is used to prevent microbial growth in makeup. The thing is, it works by forming formaldehyde compounds. Formaldehyde is carcinonogenic to animals and humans when exposed at a certain level of amount.

  • Use: Preservatives to makeup
  • Effects: Has short term and long term effects. For short term, eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing, skin rash etc. For long term, cancer, myeoid leukemia, asthma attacks.

4. Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA). This is mostly found in food presevatives, cosmetics (eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish, blush, mascara), animal feed  and rubber products.

  • Use: Preservatives, antioxidants, stabilizer
  • Effects: Anticipated to be a human carcinogenic based on experiments in animals. These disrupts epithelial cells (cells that form tissues to cover the cavities) like squamous cells which causes squamous cell carcinoma and papilloma. (read more about it here and here)

5. Synthetic Fragrance. Most products have synthetic fragrance but the huge problem is that we don't truly know what chemicals to look for since they just label it as fragrance. Fragrance is considered among the most known allergens. I suggest that we use mineral makeups because even if they smell so bad, they don't contain synthetic fragrance.

  • Use: For pleasant smelling makeup
  • Effects: Chemicals used for fragrance like Phthalates affects hormones like premature breast development in young girls. It is also linked to sperm damage in men and affect androgen and progesterone receptors.

So that's what some of my research says and I will add some more of the ingredients to avoid next time. But for now, these five are the on the top list to avoid. Just remember that to be beautiful, we need to be healthy, too!

Palladio Natural Rice Oil-Absorbing Rice Powder

Hello ladies!

I want to share with you girls my new favorite- Palladio Natural Rice Oil-Absorbing Rice Powder. And I know what you're thinking: what the hell is that? Yeah, when my sister's friend told me about this product, I was like, 'What?' and so I totally understand how you feel.

Anyway beautiful people, this is a tinted powder. I like it so much because the name says what it is: an oil absorbing powder. For a teen who has trouble controlling the oil on her face, believe me that it does lessen oil production and a bonus, it does not make your forehead or oil too shiny when oil started to form.

Palladio Natural Rice Oil-Absorbing Rice Powder Php 325

This is how it looks like. It's not like most product that comes in a compact and a mirror.

It comes with a powder puff but no mirror.

It also comes with a puff (is it called a puff?) and what I like about the puff is that it doesn't absorb much product.

It is in a box shape and it doesn't have a mirror. It looks old but whatever. Doesn't matter to me.

It is an loose powder form but it doesn't look chalky when applied.

Palladio Rice Powder in Natural

Non-comedogenic.

What I like about this is that it doesn't cause any breakouts which for me is so important. Although it contains  parabens, talc and fragrance I still like this product.

Pros:

  • Non-comedogenic
  • Cheap at Php 325 (17 grams)
  • Not Chalky
  • Absorbs oil
  • Lessen oil production
  • Not chalky when applied
  • Available in four shades (Fair, Natural, Warm beige and Nude)

Cons:

  • Doesn't give much coverage
  • You can't tightly close the container, if you're not too careful, you might spill the contents all over your makeup bag
  • I think it's only available at Beauty Bar
  • YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PUT THIS UPRIGHT!

All in all, Palladio Rice Powder is now my new favorite setting powder. And since it is tinted, you can wear it alone if you don't feel like wearing so much makeup on. This is really a good buy because it doesn't only last a long time but it totally does what is says it does. It makes your skin look matte without looking dry and when oil does starting forming, your skin will not look too greasy. I love this product and I recommend this to girl with oil control problems.

Facial Cleansers

I know that teens my age are also experiencing breakouts like I do. Breakouts have a tendency to lower one's self confidence. To prevent breakout, we must use facial cleansers that are appropriate for our skin type. Mine is really oily and I like to share what products I used that helped lessen my breakouts.

Let's start!

Neutrogena Deep Clean Foaming Cleanser.

1. Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser.
This is available in mostly all supermarkets (I bought mine in Landmark). It's an oil free cleanser so it helps skin to prevent excessive oil production but it still does moisturize the skin. This products works for me though I still experience breakouts. I use this twice a day, in the morning and before I go to sleep.

DON'T use it twice in one wash because it tends to peel the skin when you do. I tried washing my face with this twice in the morning thinking oil control will last longer but I was so wrong! I had to put makeup that day and my skin was peeling and it wasn't pretty. So yeah, don't overwash your face with this!

Price: Php 192.50
How to use: Squeeze a small amount (pea size) onto your wet palm and lather it up before rubbing on your face.  *Directly putting on your face may be too harsh so it's best to follow the direction :)

Dove Beauty Cream Bar.

2. Dove Beauty Cream Bar.
This is what I resolved to during my high school years. I have been using this ever since my acne breakouts but then stopped (because I used Neutrogena). It's actually a good product since it doesn't dry the skin. Although it doesn't help in oil control, it didn't break me out as much a Pond's did.

This is good for those who have sensitive and dry skin. I don't recommend this for people who like to stay matte for long hours because it doesn't mattify the skin.

Price: Php 50.00 (Estimated)
How to use: It's up to you, just don't apply the bar directly to your skin.

Tea Tree Oil soap.

3. Tea Tree Oil Soap.
Tea tree oil soap works well for me. It did help prevent breakouts and treat those huge zits although it doesn't help so much for keeping the oil on my face from showing. I bought mine from my dermatologist but then, I stopped going to the dermatologist so I stopped buying this too.

Price: Php 300 *Mine's from a dermatologist but I'm sure there are cheaper tea tree oil soaps out there.
How to use: Scrub your palm with the soap and lather it up. (This is how the doctor told me)

So yeah, these are the products that works and worked for me. They didn't really clear my skin but I noticed that I experience less breakouts from these cleansers. Anyway, if you happen to use any products that work for oily skin, please leave me a comment.

Celebrity Makeup Look

Hello, lovely people! Tonight I want to share to you guys, some of my favorite celebrity look. I have been trying to copy their makeup even since I watched some tutorials of their look. Unfortunately, due to my lack of experience and stuff, I wasn't able to recreate them but if I improve I will surely try them again.

Here's the list ladies!

Cara Delevingne.

I know of you girls will ask why I had Cara on my list. She doesn't  wear makeup when she's off duty, I know that. But that's what I like about her look. Being a model is hard, especially when people thinks you're perfect. Cara isn't afraid to show the world who she is. She doesn't care if cameras are following her around capturing photos of her barefaced, eye bags on the loose etc.

Besides that, I think every girl is beautiful even if without makeup. I love makeup but I do appreciate natural beauty a lot. So yeah, girls, you should not be afraid to go outside without makeup because if you look beautiful without makeup on, how much more if you do have them on?

Anyway, when Cara's on the red carpet or attending events or photo shoot, here are some of my favorite looks of her.

Smokey eye with nude lipstick.

I am such a huge fan of Cara Delevingne and her bushy brows! So I love that she has minimal makeup on and the focus is on her brows. Smokey eye makeup and thin line of eyeliner and nude lipsticks is perfect for a date or a formal event.

Subtle makeup makes her eyebrows look much more beautiful.

Her eyelids has a white or cream eyeshadow and very thin line of eyeliner. Her eyebrows don't look too heavy because she has a red lipstick on that balances the look.

In this look, her brows are a little lighter and she has little eyeshadow and a popping red lipstick.

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey's makeup is so beautiful. I think her 60's look is very pretty. The colors are not that heavy so you can wear them during the day. It looks very natural and wearable. The crease is my favorite because when you apply the right color and you blended it properly, it will give an illusion of deeper eyelids. I like white bases on my lid and I don't like wearing heavy eye makeup and this look is just so perfect for me.

See her lids?

I just love the lids. It's all about the eyes and everything remains subtle. No need to wear fake lashes if you're just wearing this look for school.

Perfect for everyday look.

I really think this will work for girls, teens and ladies who want to wear light makeup. Lana has a vintage aura on her and this look suits her so much! Want to perfect this look soon!

Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn's look is a little close to what Lana wears. But Audrey has fuller brows and no fake lashes because they don't exist yet I think? Anyway, this is an everyday look, too.

White lids, crease line.

Her eyelids are white with brown eyeshadow to define the crease. Notice that she doesn't wear any blush on, just a little contouring. And see that flick on her eyes? She's into cateye eyeliner!

Katy Perry

Next is le Katy Perry. I love Katy's looks. She can anything and still look pretty. The photo above makes me think of a Marilyn Monroe look ( you know, it's about the brows and lips). It is like a pinup look and the simplicity of the makeup is complimented by the red lipstick. If you ask me, it's a very elegant look and can be worn as day makeup (without the fake lashes) or as a formal look.

Pop of colors!

I know I said that she can wear anything and still look pretty and I think this look proves it. Not many celebrities like to pop a vibrant color into their eye shadow but Katy isn't just any celebrity. She's a celebrity who's not afraid to step out of her comfort zone. She can totally rock this purple and green eyeshadow with a light pink lipstick!

Minka Kelly

It's Minka Kelly everyone. I love how her skin looks so natural. There's just this refreshing glow on her face like she's just had a wonderful day at the beach.

Everything subtle.

See her makeup? It looks very natural. Her makeup is mainly about the bronzed look and peachy lips. Her eye makeup is more of the brown scheme with smudged eyeliner for a smokey look.

Camilla Belle

Prada to Nada's Camilla Belle. Like Cara Delevingne, her look is about emphasizing her brows. I like her brows a lot and I love that she wears little makeup so her brows are still noticeable.

Dark brows.

I like that she doesn't wear too much makeup on her eyes because I think that will overpower her look and darker eyeshadow for girls with thick brows is just too much.

What do you think? If you have some favorite celebrity makeup look, please share it to me!

Makeup Tutorial: Who to Follow

Hey girls! First, I want to tell you that I am a huge fan of make up! I like their colors, their texture and other amazing stuff they have. As much as I love makeup, it is just now that I have the courage to put makeup on my face. As I don't have much experience or talent on makeup, I decided to watch makeup tutorials on Youtube so I can learn some techniques and all.

Here are some of my favorite Youtube makeup gurus!

Tanya Burr

1. Tanya Burr. She is my favorite makeup guru ever! She's very cute and talkative like she's telling you first hand what to do. I love her so much! She is blessed with a lovely skin and her tutorials are very awesome. Most of her tutorials are celebrity inspired. Like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and many others. Oh, and she's British!

Here is a favorite from her Youtube Channel: Tanya Burr. The video above is a Lana Del Rey 60's make up tutorial. Try watching this, it's very much like Lana's makeup!

Michelle Phan

2. Michelle Phan. Before you ask, no, she's not a Filipina. At first I thought she's a Filipina but when I searched for her, they said that she is from Boston and is an American citizen. Anyway, her contours are the best! She can actually make her face look like the shape of the celebrity she's doing a makeup tutorial of!

So yeah this video is actually amazing because her nose looks like Miranda Kerr's.
Follow her on her Youtube Channel: Michelle Phan

Jackie Wyers

3. Jackie Wyers. I know she is very pretty! She kind of reminds of AnnaSophia Robb and Madelline Carroll. At a young age, I can say that she's very much experienced with makeup and I love her so much!

This is my favorite of her tutorials: A Cara Delevingne Makeup Tutorial.

So yeah, I know I posted just three of them. But I promise that I will update this post and add a couple more  gurus to watch for beginners!

My Playlist

Hey girls! This is not about any makeup reviews but it's about music today. Most girls I know like to listen to music. I'd like to share with you some of my favorites.

I don't really have that one genre of songs that I listen to, actually, I to a lot of music. I mean it when I said a lot. I even listen to songs covers. Anyway, I just like a song that has a unique tone or whatever. Hearing something new is way better than listening to just one genre not to mention it will be boring.

So yeah let's start with my playlist!

1. Royals by Lorde. I think I read somewhere that she is the first New Zealand singer that has a song that landed number 1 in United States. Anyway, listen to this song as it has a very calming tone and her voice is amazing!

2. Next To You by Chris Brown ft. Justin Bieber. I know this is old but hey I am really in love with this song. I like the beat the lyrics and all. Chris Brown has always been one of my favorites!

3. Unconditioally by Katy Perry. I ended up listening to this all day because I am always on Youtube and this showed on Katy Perry's Vevo. This song is from her new album PRISM. I'm loving this song!

4. 22 by Taylor Swift. I love TayTay forever and I love every bits of her. This is just one of my favorites! I remember singing this when sister turned 22! Anyway I like the beat and it's so catchy so it's easy to memorize!

5. Little Things by One Direction. I know some of you might hate them but I don't care I like their music and Little Things just makes me feel like I'm beautiful no matter how I look. This is not the only song I like but this is the best I think because they help boost up the confidence of girls who think they are ugly and all when in fact they are not.

6. Wings by Little Mix. I love all their songs! It's not because I love Zayn and he's engage to Perrie. No, it wasn't that. Their songs are just amazing. And this is one is about not letting anyone take you down. Just be yourself and follow your dreams, it doesn't matter what they say (at least this is how I interpreted it).

7. Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus. Honestly, I prefer the tame Miley but her being wild made her music much better. I am not a huge fan of her sitting naked on a ball but I survived.

8. Lego House by Ed Sheeran. The video is so weird. You know Ron from Harry Potter? He's in it. Weird video or not the music is so awesome.

9. Almost Is Never Enough by Ariana Grande ft. Nathan Sykes. I am not a huge fan of Ariana Grande and I'm not a hater either. But yeah I like this song. She and Nathan do sound good together!

10. Vegas Skies by The Cab. This is an old song but I really like this. I like slow and romantic music like this one. I think this song is really sweet and very emotional I guess.

These are just ten of my favorite songs but they are the most played song in my iTunes. Sorry for not putting a Youtuber in this post but I promise that the next time I post something, I'll make sure to remember to post something about my favorite Youtubers.

So, what do you think?

ELF Eyebrow Treat and Tame

ELF's Eyebrow Treat and Tame in Medium. Php 250.

I want brows like Cara and after some research, I read that she uses Anastasia Brow Gel for her bushy brows. Unfortunately, it is not available here so I had to look for other brow gels. And I happened to land on this one, ELF's Eyebrow Treat and Tame.

ELF has two kinds of brow gels. The other one looks like an eye shadow palette that has a gel and an eye shadow. Then this, the Treat and Tame.

For beginners (like me), Treat and Tame is actually a nice brow gel since it is easier to apply. It has two sides, the tame and the treat. The treat which is the clear gel is applied first , followed by the tame which is the brown one. The treat side has a brush that looks like an eye shadow applicator and the tame side has a brush that is like a mascara wand. I really like this product since it does not smudge when you are sweating. It is not a waterproof brow gel but it looks like it is one. I am a sweaty person and I appreciate this kind of brow gel at a low price.

The not so good side of this brow gel is you easily ran out of it. I bought this just more than a month ago and I am not using it on a daily basis but I easily ran out of it. It is at a very low price but I think many are buying this brow gel so there is just a little supply of this on some stores. And, this is not good for people who have few eyebrow hairs. This is only good for people who have many thin hair brows.

Anyway, I am loving this product so much but I will try to buy other brow gels. Some are much more expensive than this one so for a thrifty person, I really prefer this one.

If you like this product or you want to tell me what you think of it, please leave a comment below!
